Camellia oil—traditionally used in Japan—is made from the seeds of Camellia oleifera, a plant in the same family as camellia and tea, and is widely valued for protecting tools against rust.

Ideal for routine maintenance, it can be applied after cleaning and drying tools to displace moisture and leave a light protective coating. It’s especially useful for carbon steel blades, pruning shears, and garden tools that are exposed to damp conditions.

The oil spreads easily and wipes down cleanly, leaving a smooth, non-greasy finish. Odorless and non-toxic, it’s also suitable for kitchen knives, making it a simple, all-purpose step in everyday tool care.

    Use

    Add a few drops of Camellia oil to the carbon steel blade or tool (water works fine too, but you'll want to oil the blade later anyway) then use Clean Mate as you would an eraser. It has a fairly rough texture and might scratch polished surfaces, so we suggest testing before use.

    After removing leaf resin, rust, and gunk, dry the tool, knife, or blade with a clean cloth and then wipe with Camellia oil and store in a dry place.
