Camellia Oil
Japanese steel knives and tools, like the ones we sell from Niwaki, benefit from a few simple care routines to maintain their finish and ensure years of use.
Made from the seeds of Camellia oleifera (same family as Camellia and tea), Camellia oil is the traditional Japanese choice for protecting tools from rust. Use it when cleaning, and as a regular protective coating.
It leaves a lovely deep, non-oily finish, and it's odorless and tasteless, making it suitable for kitchen knives too.

Further Reading:Niwaki (knee-whacky) means garden tree. In Japan, gardens are both landscapes and microcosms of nature. Shaping and caring for these landscapes is an art form, and having the correct tools is essential. Niwaki’s tools exemplify the good design and quality construction that we look for as purveyors.
