Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a company like Boston General Store?
There’s a lot that happens between placing your order and seeing a Boston General Store box arrive at your door. Read on to meet our team (spoiler alert: none of them are robots) and see what goes into packing each order we receive.
Step 1: We pick your order
What exactly does that mean, you ask? Do we line up all the orders like in gym class and assign captains to pick teams until there’s no one left? You’ll be glad to know that’s not what picking refers to, as we prefer to leave that special sort of trauma in our past.
Picking means finding all the products needed for a batch of orders and sorting them by order. With a warehouse stocked with everything from toilet brushes to fountain pen nibs, this takes time and skill.
It’s a bit like shopping and a little like an organized scavenger hunt, which means some of us find picking really fun.
Step 2 : We check your order
Like Santa, we make a list and check it twice. Do they use handheld scanners and barcodes at the North Pole? We’re not sure. But we do, making sure we have exactly what you ordered, down to the color, size, and every other detail.
We also give everything a good once-over to make sure quality is up to snuff. Products get moved and handled a lot on their way from their maker to our shelves, and we want to make sure what arrives at your door is something we’d be happy to receive ourselves.
Step 3: We play Tetris
We don’t actually play Tetris, unless we’re on our break. But packing a box with our assortment of goods can sometimes feel like a puzzle.
Our team chooses an appropriately sized box, protects anything fragile, and arranges everything so it stays secure in transit without using more packaging than necessary.
Step 4: We send it on its merry way
Once everything is checked and packed, we seal up the box, create the shipping label, and prepare it to leave the warehouse. Our carriers pick up the day’s shipments, and your order begins the next leg of its journey.
And then we do it all over again.
During our busiest times of year, we repeat this process hundreds of times each day. In anticipation of the holiday season, we triple the size of our Massachusetts-based shipping team to help keep up.
Some orders are simple. Others require a little more time and problem-solving. What matters to us is giving each one the attention it needs. We think the extra care is worth it, and we hope you do, too.
