About Hobonichi

Hobonichi was founded in Japan in 1998 by writer and copywriter Shigesato Itoi as a personal digital publication featuring personal essays and interviews. Named Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun (meaning "Almost Daily Itoi Newspaper") the website featured personal essays, interviews, and long-form cultural content.
In 2001, the company expanded into physical products, eventually launching the first Hobonichi Techo as a daily planner focused on simplicity, flexibility, and usability.

Today, Hobonichi is a Japanese lifestyle brand celebrated for thoughtfully designed stationery that inspires creativity, organization, and self-expression through exceptional craftsmanship, playful design, and meticulous attention to detail. A passionate global community has grown around the brand, with users sharing the unique ways they incorporate their Techos into everyday life.
From iconic planners to notebooks, accessories, and writing tools, each Hobonichi product is designed to bring joy to every moment while encouraging users to document and create in their own unique way.
What is the Hobonichi Techo?
The Hobonichi Techo traces its origins to 1998. Wanting a planner they would genuinely enjoy using themselves, the Hobonichi team set out to design one from the ground up. The result was the first version of what is now known as the Hobonichi Techo Original.
Released in 2002, the first Techo introduced many of the features that continue to define the planner today, including lightweight yet durable Tomoe River paper, color-coded monthly pages, and lay-flat binding for a comfortable writing experience.

As the Hobonichi community grew, users shared their ideas and feedback, inspiring the company to refine the Techo year after year. This commitment to continuous improvement has helped create a planner that is both highly personal and thoughtfully designed.
More than two decades later, the Techo has become a beloved planner around the world. Each year, fans eagerly await Hobonichi's annual Techo release, unveiled in late August with a new collection of books, covers, collaborations, and accessories for the coming year.
What makes Hobonichi Techo different?
All Hobonichi planners are thoughtfully crafted with design features that have been carefully chosen based on years of customer use and feedback. Every detail is intentional, from the width of the grid lines to the rounded page corners.

One of the most noteworthy features of the Techo books is the Tomoe River paper. Thin but strong, this paper allows the book to contain many pages without being overly bulky, and is well suited for fountain pens. The book's thread-stitched binding is reinforced with flexible materials, which means the book will lay flat when it’s open without sacrificing durability.

What stands out most about Hobonichi's lineup is each Techo's infinite customizability, striking the perfect balance between structure and flexibility. With so many ways to use it, the Techo becomes something entirely personal—shaped by the user’s own habits, creativity, and routine.
What Hobonichi Techo options are available?

Hobonichi offers a wide variety of layouts, sizes, and formats, with options to suit all kinds of planning styles and needs. Whether you're looking for an organizational tool, a portable daily planner, a space to capture memories and thoughts, or a combination of all three, there’s likely a Hobonichi Techo for you.

Techo Cousin and Techo Original
The Techo Original (A6) and the Techo Cousin (A5) are the foundation of the Hobonichi lineup. As the original Hobonichi designs, they've been thoughtfully refined over the years while staying true to the features that made them favorites.
Both sizes can be used on their own for a clean, minimalist setup, or used in conjunction with Hobonichi's Techo Covers for a personalized touch.
Inside, you'll find a yearly calendar index for a general overview of your year, as well as monthly calendars for easy planning. Each daily page includes time-of-day segments on the left, check boxes for to-dos or habit tracking, Hobonichi’s signature quotes at the bottom.
Each month is color-coded on the book's edges for easy flip-through. The back section of the book features blank memo pages and annually updated interactive bonus pages.
Techo Planner
To offer a more simplified layout, Hobonichi later introduced the Techo Planner (A6).
When compared to the Techo Original, the A6 Techo Planner features a slightly larger 4mm grid and a simplified daily timeline, providing additional flexibility. Unlike the Techo Original, where each month is distinguished by a different color, the Planner offers a classic look with all months in grey and Sundays highlighted in red.
Hobonichi HON
The Hobonichi HON has the same contents as the Techo Original A6 or Cousin A5, but with a hardcover that makes it usable on its own without a separate cover.
Techo Weeks
In addition to the Techo Original, Planner, and Cousin, we also stock the Techo Weeks. Techo Weeks features a week-per-page format in a long, wallet-sized book with a slim profile. Year- and month-at-a-glance spreads support long-term planning, while blank pages provide space for note taking, sketching, and freeform journaling.
A cover and planner in one, the Weeks is offered in a variety of materials and designs to show off your personality, while maintaining the same interior layout across all editions.
5-Year Techo
The Hobonichi 5-Year Techo is a Japanese-language planner that lets you record and reflect on five years of daily life, with each page offering a side-by-side view of entries from the same date across multiple years.
Techo Covers
The Techo Original, Cousin, and Planner books are available as standalone books or paired with a cover. From simple solid colors to limited-edition artist collaborations, Hobonichi offers a wide range of covers in various sizes, designs, and materials. Whether you're looking for everyday functionality or a style that reflects your personality, there's a cover to keep your planner protected and organized.

A great way to add visual interest to your Techo is with stickers! Decorate the cover of your notebook, fill blank pages, or mark the days that stand out from the rest. Many of Hobonichi's sticker designs are created in collaboration with artists and illustrators, making each collection a unique way to personalize your planner and add that special touch.
