FLEUR SPICED STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKES by Hey Modest Marce

You're probably asking "What are fleur spiced shortcakes!?" Well, I will TELL you!

They are shortcakes mixed with a flower-filled spice blend of pink pepper, hibiscus, lavender & rose made by Curio Spice Co's Fleur Spice from Boston General Store.

While this spice blend can be used in both sweet + savory dishes, strawberries are one of the recommended fruits to use, so I knew I had to do strawberry shortcakes. I decided to go with the classic biscuit-style strawberry shortcakes that are portioned individually, because...biscuits. The flaky, buttery biscuit and the sweet whipped cream compliment the fleur spiced strawberries perfectly.

Using a mortar & pestle I mixed cane sugar with the spice blend & ground it down to a very fine powder. I wanted the cane sugar to really be incorporated into the spice & for the strawberries to essentially marinate in the mix.

Read below for a list of ingredients and to learn how to make this delicious treat!

Ingredients

for the biscuits:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, cold & cubed
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

for the fleur spice strawberries:

  • 2 cups strawberries, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Fleur Spice
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar

for the whipped cream:

  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar

Directions

  • for the biscuits: preheat oven to 375 degrees. in a mixing bowl add the flour, baking powder, salt & sugar. stir until combined. using your hands or a pastry cutter, cut in the butter like you would a pie dough until the mixture is crumbly. add the heavy cream & vanilla and mix until the dough comes together. turn out onto a floured surface, roll out dough to a 3/4 inch thickness & cut into desired sized biscuits. bake for 10-15 minutes, until the biscuits are golden brown.
  • for the fleur spice strawberries: place the sliced strawberries in a mixing bowl. using a mortar & pestle grind the sugar with the fleur spice. add the ground mixture to the strawberries & toss to coat. set aside while you make the whipped cream & let the strawberries soak in the flavors.
  • for the whipped cream: in the bowl of a stand mixer using the whisk attachment, add the cream, vanilla & sugar. beat until stiff peaks are formed.
  • to assemble: when ready to serve, slice the biscuit in half horizontally. top bottom with whipped cream, strawberries, whipped cream & biscuit top. serve with fresh strawberries & a touch of sugar.

Volante Farms: History, Grown from the Ground
Volante Farms: History, Grown from the Ground

November 07, 2017

Celebrating it's 100th year in business, the grounds of Volante have lived through more cultural change than most of us could experience in two lifetimes. But how did this local farm outlive and outlast so much transition and stay successful for an entire century?

For one, Volante Farms has been continuously family owned and operated for all of the 100 years they've been around. Second, Volante has adapted. Not just in our time of this new century, but always.

Great Gift Ideas for Party Hosts
Great Gift Ideas for Party Hosts

October 24, 2017

'Tis the season for hosting parties, folks. And since you're likely going to be an attendee at one of many this year, it's the right time to start thinking about how you're going to say thank you for all those invitations.

Bringing a host or hostess gift isn't always everyone's first priority when they're attending a party. We can understand that. If it's an elegant event, you're likely going to spend most of your time leading up to that night worrying about what to wear. If it's a casual shindig, you might be scrambling to find someone to cover your shift, or looking for a babysitter, so you can actually show up.

Tabulae Sunglasses: Meet the Maker
Tabulae Sunglasses: Meet the Maker

September 12, 2017

Boston General Store recently started carrying wares from Tabulae Eyewear, a maker based out of Brooklyn, New York whom we met at a trade show earlier this year. They're looking to throw some shade at the eyewear market and change the way it operates by offering high-quality sunglasses that are well-designed and stylish, but more affordable than other (larger) brand offerings.

We spent time chatting with Troy, one of the owners, and founder, of Tabulae Eyewear to find out exactly what makes Tabulae sunglasses the better choice in this crowded market:
