Further Reading:  Koh-i-Noor’s roots date back to 1790, when Josef Hardtmuth founded an earthenware factory in Vienna. His son Franz developed the graphite degree system we still use today—using H for Hardtmuth, B for Budweis (where the family factory was later moved to), and F for Franz. The Hardtmuth family set the standards for innovation in art materials throughout the 19th century, and their legacy lives on in the brand today.
