Small Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil

In Portugal, small fish like sardines are called petinga. In the south, they’re sometimes known as esquilha—a name once given to the children of village fishermen. Rich in nutrients like omega-3s, protein, and calcium, these simply prepared sardines are packed without preservatives, preserving their fresh flavor just as the esquilha would have enjoyed.

Materials: sardines, extra virgin olive oil, salt

Produced on shared equipment and may contain traces of eggs, gluten from wheat, mollusks, and crustacean shellfish.

Further Reading:  José Gourmet sources exceptional seafood from the coasts of Portugal and Spain, working closely with local fishers and canneries that prioritize quality and tradition. Committed to fair trade practices, they often pay in advance and never bargain down prices. Their beautifully illustrated packaging, featuring the work of Portuguese artists, honors the people behind each tin—those whose livelihoods are rooted in lifelong dedication to the fisheries trade.
