In tribute to the timeless craft of woodworking, the Volume 21 Blackwing pencil was born out of appreciation for Shakers and their unwavering devotion to craftsmanship. These expert woodworkers saw the beauty and usefulness of simple shapes, solid joinery, and natural materials—which is exactly what inspired Blackwing's mission to make enduring, thoughtfully crafted tools for writing.

The number 21 represents the wisdom of "measure twice, cut once", an adage that encourages mindfulness, slowing down, and making purposeful choices, both in woodworking and in life.

Each pencil features finger-jointed slats, created by joining two short wooden pieces using a classic woodworking technique. Its natural dark brown finish highlights Blackwing's first-ever square barrel with an extra wide face, showcasing the finger joints on every pencil. The firm graphite offers excellent point retention with a buttery smooth feel—ideal for measuring and marking cut lines, and then measuring them again. Each pencil is capped with a silver ferrule, holding Blackwing's iconic rectangular eraser in black.

Blackwing's Volumes are released quarterly and feature limited-edition pencils that celebrate the people, places, and events that have defined our creative culture over time.
