Sharpening Stone #220
Niwaki's coarse #220-grit Sharpening Stone creates a foundation for restoring neglected or severely dull blades.
Designed primarily for secateurs, this stone also works to reshape the edges of shears, clippers, and other tools. Its concave edge follows the curve of the blade, while its compact size makes it easy to reach tight spots and corners.
Coarse grit reshapes worn edges and helps remove nicks and dings, creating the foundation for finer sharpening stages. Follow with a fine and super-fine grit to refine and polish the edge. See usage instructions below—the two golden rules are to soak thoroughly before each use, and, above all, not to drop it.

Made by: Niwaki
Made in: Japan
Specifications:
- 5.3" x 0.8" x 1.1"
- coarse #220 grit
Use: This stone should be used for very dull or damaged blades, before a fine #1000 grit and super-fine #3000 grit. If the blade edge is not severely dulled, we recommend starting at a #1000 grit for general maintenance.
- Soak stone in water for a 3-4 minutes before use, and periodically sprinkle water to keep wet during use.
- Gently move stone back and forth along the whole length of the blade, using as much of the stone as possible—not just the top.
- Secateurs: Use the concave edge of the stone, moving from the pivot towards the tip of the blade, following the curve as you go.
- Straight-bladed shears: Use the flat side of the stone.
- Next, turn the tool over, and use the flat side of the stone to smooth the burr off the inside of the blade, going slightly over, creating a very fine bevel.
- Use the convex edge of the stone to clean off the curved edge of the bypass.
- Finally, clean and dry the blades, and wipe with Camellia Oil.
