From the moment we first encountered Fischer’s beautiful brass-encased climate meters, we knew they were a perfect fit for our stores. The company's unwavering dedication to precision engineering and the legacy of their third-generation family-owned business made partnering with them an easy choice.
The Boston General Store x Fischer Comfort-Meter is a combination of a thermometer for measuring air temperature and a hygrometer for measuring relative humidity. Fischer refers to it as a climate meter. It can be used indoors or out.*
Our Comfort Meter is housed in a brass casing and features our custom wording, logo, and dark green needles. The color of the brass will deepen over time and acquire a warm patina, lending an antique feel.
The Comfort Meter will look handsome in any room of the house and complements any decor. It’s the perfect gift for new homeowners or that hard-to-shop-for person who has everything.
Materials: solid brass housing
Made by: Fischer for Boston General Store
Made in: Germany
Specifications: 5.1" diameter x 1.6" deep (3.3" deep including legs)
Getting technical:
The thermometer measures in °F and the measuring element is a bimetal strip with a high specific deflection, meaning it reacts noticeably with even small temperature fluctuations.
A hair hygrometer measures relative humidity as a percentage. This hygrometer uses synthetic hair as the measuring element, which expands as humidity increases. This change in length is then transferred to the pointer through a precise mechanism, allowing it to display the humidity level.
Use: If you're new to using a climate meter, there’s a small learning curve. Ours features two pointers—one for humidity and one for temperature—that indicate your room’s comfort level. The numerical readings provide precise data, and where the two needles intersect shows whether your room falls within the ideal range.
*Our Comfort-Meter can be used indoors or out. When used outside, be sure to mount it in an area that is protected from the elements. Direct exposure to wind, rain, snow, or sun will cause it to not work as effectively.
Synthetic hair hygrometers (as opposed to hygrometers which use real human hair) require less maintenance in that they can be used effectively in periods of low humidity without needing regeneration. (Read more on that process here.) Synthetic hair hygrometers like ours can be used indoors or out, but do become sluggish in temperatures under 32°F. Therefore, if your Comfort-Meter is placed outdoors, know that the accuracy of the hygrometer needle could be affected by very low temperatures. This should correct itself once the temperature and humidity rises.
Care: Brass products will take on a patina as they age. If you prefer the look of polished brass, metal polishes such as Brasso can be used to restore the original luster.
Using the Comfort-Meter outdoors will accelerate the development of patina.
