Snow Days and Cocktails

With the possibility of ANOTHER snow day approaching Boston, I thought I would post a few cocktail recipes that Dram Apothecary created using their handmade Bitters. I know last snow in I was going a bit stir crazy and a cocktail would have been most helpful. Here are a few of my favorites...

Sable Snow:

"This is a simple toddy recipe for a cold day, with just a few ingredients that work together so well, it will seem fancier than the sum of it's parts. The foundation of any good hot toddy is generally warm water, citrus and some kind of sweetener. It's easy and enjoyable to dress up this equation using infused honeys, flavored syrups, bitters and various kinds of citrus." -Dram Apothecary

Ingredients:

- 1 1/2 oz. good Bourbon
- 1/2 Tablespoon Vanilla Bean Infused Honey- this is simple, add a sliced vanilla bean to 1 cup of honey and warm in a glass container, inside of a pot of warm water until fragrant. never microwave honey.
- 5 shakes DRAM Wild Mountain Sage Bitters
- wedges of fresh orange
- 2 cinnamon sticks per drink
- very hot water

Directions:

Prepare the vanilla bean honey. Add all ingredients to a mug and let steep for a bit before enjoying so the cinnamon and orange wedges become fragrant. Stir and enjoy!

The Carthusian Cocoa:

"Here's a secret to warm you in the winter: Chartreuse + hot cocoa. Any food or drink taken from the nostalgic days of childhood and adapted for adults only is always a winner in our opinion, this little ditty won't let you down. Chartreuse is an herbal liqueur having been crafted by Carthusian Monks since 1737 in the Chartreuse Mountains of France. It can be quite pricey, but any good liquor store will carry the smaller bottles which are a wonderful addition to any home bar, novice or otherwise. There are traditionally two types made- Green and Yellow, the Yellow being a bit more mild. We've chosen to use Yellow in this recipe as to blend with the nuances of the chocolate and not overpower, but either will do. Don't be wary of the homemade whipped cream, its insanely easy to make." -Dram Apothecary

Ingredients:

• 1.5 oz Yellow Chartreuse
• 3 oz organic hot cocoa
• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
• 1/4 cup sugar
DRAM Citrus Medica Bitters
• Shaved dark chocolate- the method of shaving doesn't matter, we used the large side of a cheese grater down the side of a dark chocolate bar

Directions:

Place a medium sized stainless steel bowl into the freezer for 20 minutes, remove and add the whipping cream plus 2 tablespoons DRAM Citrus Medica Bitters and the 1/4 cup of sugar. Using a hand blender, beat on high until the cream begins to thicken into your desired texture of whipped cream. Cover and place in the fridge.
Heat up 3 oz of your preferred cocoa- we like this one: http://shop.equalexchange.coop/chocolate/cocoa/organic-hot-cocoa-mix-12oz.html
Add the hot cocoa and Chartreuse to a drinking mug, top with a big dollop of the whipped cream and shaved chocolate.

Thank you to Shae from Dram Apothecary for the recipes. Maybe this snow day won't be so bad ;)
