Meet the Newest Maker at the Shop!

written by: Dan M.

Most people familiar with Boston General Store know our goal: to bring long-lasting, well-crafted products, made by people driven by the love of what they create, to the rest of the world.

Meeting makers is the best part of doing this work because experiencing their passion firsthand re-inspires us to keep working toward that goal. Which is why we are so excited to introduce the newest maker to our store...

Boston General Store!

Yep, we're introducing ourselves.

When the store first began as a small idea operating out of the extra space in my dining room, I had so many dreams for what the future could look like. One of those dreams was to establish a line of BGS brand products that would be made with the same values used by the artisans we believed in.

Earlier this year we partnered with the gentleman over at Manready Mercantile, a Houston-based outfit that started as a candlemaker. I admired their product from the moment I discovered them and began carrying their goods at the shop. Their approach to craftsmanship is promising, creating everything through honesty and hard work, so I knew they were a perfect match to collaborate with.

After a ton of planning (and a few Shiner Bock's), we came up with a design for a product that embodied the great aspects of New England living.

I grew up spending a lot of time in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. When you get to experience this part of the New England-Acadian landscape, the one thing that never leaves you are its unique sights and smells. Our ambition was to capture that memory through a blend of high-quality fragrances in the form of a candle.

With scents of wood, leather and smoke, Acadian Night is meant to evoke the spirit of an evening spent in the quiet wilderness of the northeast United States. It can bring you back to that end-of-summer vacation at the family cabin in Maine or a to a fall hike in the White Mountains.

The candles are hand poured and made in small batches using the highest quality essential oils and 100% soy wax, which is non toxic and burns cleaner than a standard paraffin candle.

Come into the shop to give it a whiff someday (we'll have one burning) and let us know what you think. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as we do.

See you soon!

Volante Farms: History, Grown from the Ground
Volante Farms: History, Grown from the Ground

November 07, 2017

Celebrating it's 100th year in business, the grounds of Volante have lived through more cultural change than most of us could experience in two lifetimes. But how did this local farm outlive and outlast so much transition and stay successful for an entire century?

For one, Volante Farms has been continuously family owned and operated for all of the 100 years they've been around. Second, Volante has adapted. Not just in our time of this new century, but always.

Great Gift Ideas for Party Hosts
Great Gift Ideas for Party Hosts

October 24, 2017

'Tis the season for hosting parties, folks. And since you're likely going to be an attendee at one of many this year, it's the right time to start thinking about how you're going to say thank you for all those invitations.

Bringing a host or hostess gift isn't always everyone's first priority when they're attending a party. We can understand that. If it's an elegant event, you're likely going to spend most of your time leading up to that night worrying about what to wear. If it's a casual shindig, you might be scrambling to find someone to cover your shift, or looking for a babysitter, so you can actually show up.

Tabulae Sunglasses: Meet the Maker
Tabulae Sunglasses: Meet the Maker

September 12, 2017

Boston General Store recently started carrying wares from Tabulae Eyewear, a maker based out of Brooklyn, New York whom we met at a trade show earlier this year. They're looking to throw some shade at the eyewear market and change the way it operates by offering high-quality sunglasses that are well-designed and stylish, but more affordable than other (larger) brand offerings.

We spent time chatting with Troy, one of the owners, and founder, of Tabulae Eyewear to find out exactly what makes Tabulae sunglasses the better choice in this crowded market:
